Shave and a Haircut
Anything that is out of the ordinary, that shakes up the schedule can be a problem. Personal hygiene is something that I have to prod poke and push my Dad into doing. I lay out his clean clothes each morning, and sometimes he changes, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he put the clean clothes on over the dirty ones. When I throw a shower into the mix, I can just figure the day may not work out so well for me.
I dare not mention the shower until it’s almost time to do it, or he’ll worry and obsess over it. I also have to ‘treat’ him, or have a goal for AFTER the shower to make it a more pleasant chore for him. Today that goal was going for a haircut.
I put his clean underwear and shirt in the bathroom, layout his towel, take my shampoos etc from the shower, pre-warm the water. I have the soap with the wash cloth. Okay, Daddy, time for your shower. Take your clothes off, wrap your towel around you and then call me and I’ll turn the water on for you. (He has yet to master our shower controls - pull on - push off - turn right for cold, left for hot). I have to remind him twice while he’s in there what he’s on task for. He calls for me, I turn the water on, temper it - and remind him what he’s suppose to do. The last thing I ask him is, “How do you turn the water off?” - otherwise he may take the whole shower head off (this has happened). I can only trust that he washes well. I have sent him back in when the soap doesn’t get wet.
After he gets his underwear on, he goes to his room to put the rest of his clothes on - I put his deoderant on him and leave him to dress. It is a long process, but he does a fine job, even matching his belt to his outfit most days.
If I’ve told him we’re going somewhere - I better be ready to GO that somewhere, or he’ll be watch checking every 2 minutes! ha ha ha.
This time, he had to wait while I took a shower, so he just took a little catnap. It worked out great.
Haircut went fine. We had to wait about 20 minutes for our turn and I think he enjoyed the conversation and the different scenery. He still tries to be funny. Roger trimmed his mustache as well and I must say he looked pretty darned nice when all was said and done!
We met my friend Joyce for lunch at the Chinese Buffet. He cleaned his plate and had ice cream for dessert. He stayed in the car (with it running) while I picked up a couple things at the grocery store. He was a little wobbly on his feet, telling me that his feet just weren’t working.
He did a little survey of the property and some cat patrol in the afternoon, but it was pretty hot outside so he didn’t stay out long. Catnaps in the recliner while watching the food channel and Paula Deen.
Supper was frozen pizza - we had a big lunch!! and bedtime was at 6:45 PM.
